Bitti’s twelve Cambridge sonatas, representing the composer’s late, galant style, are characterized by lovingly sculpted ornamental detail for the violin, resourceful harmony and perfectly proportioned forms. The seventh work of the group, in five movements, comprises three well-contrasted quick movements and two intervening slow movements.#-#In the opening movement, the bass and violin parts test the performers’ ability in equal measure. The final movement, marked Allegrissimo, has some deft, humorous touches, parodying the kind of imitation practised in the stile antico.
