    In this musical exploration of meteorology Cecilia McDowall sets a fascinating libretto by Kate Wakeling. The text for the first movement, 'Celsius Rising', is drawn from writings by scientist Anders Celsius and presents a narrative of discovery, sung by the soprano soloist, that unfolds slowly and wondrously over a gently supportive chorus. 'History of Air' provides an insight into the challenges faced by the American scientist and women's rights campaigner Eunice Newton Foote in sharing her climate science discoveries. This is depicted by the soloist's shift from an ornate delivery of the words 'mercury rising' to an entirely wordless line that ultimately leaves the musical phrase unanswered, hanging in mid-air. The work closes with the bright, uplifting 'Sublime Science', which draws from a publication by the UK Meteorological Office's founder, Captain FitzRoy, called The Weather Book, with which this captivating piece shares its name.
