"A Pilgrimes Solace", 22 Lieder auf weltliche und geistliche Texte, war Dowlands letzte Publikation und ist zugleich sein reifstes Werk. Einige Stücke beziehen alternativ zusätzlich ein Vokalensemble als Chorus mit ein. Der Liederzyklus in der spielpraktischen Einrichtung von Werner J. Wolff macht wertvolle Musik des berühmten englischen Komponisten auch der heutigen Musikwelt zugänglich. Dowlands Lautenmusik ist zum Teil eine wehmütig-leidenschaftliche Grundhaltung zu eigen, seine Vokalmusik reiht ihn unter den besten Liedkomponisten ein.
